How Sweeten It Is!Author:Abigail Stone
Sweeten, which plays matchmaker for general contractors with home and business owners about to embark on a renovation, lands in Los Angeles as its first step towards conquering the West Coast.
Architect Jean Brownhill thought she had it in the bag when it came to hiring a general contractor to work on her new home. Her experience quickly proved otherwise. “I knew there were good GCs out there, I just couldn’t find them,” she says. She launched Sweeten in New York in 2011 to help other homeowners in the same position.
The company, which expanded to Los Angeles at the beginning of June, now serves Connecticut, Philadelphia, New Jersey with Chicago and Miami set to open by the end of the year (and NorCal soon after). Sweeten vets the contractors that work through their site and has in-house project managers who oversee the process from start to finish. “We only make an introduction when we have a double confirmation that both parties are interested in working together. From there we facilitate everything from site visits to estimates to walking you through the bid.” The site even includes in-app messaging so that all correspondence can be monitored in case of a misunderstanding. “The process of renovating is opaque for everyone,” she says, “We’re doing our best to make it more transparent, to bring more information and just more successful renovations.” Thousands of smiling, happy owners on the Sweeten blog testify to its success.
