1. How did you first get started in design?I was originally working as personal trainer and decided I needed a different trade and went back to school. As a student, I also took a job at a lighting store and then onto an Ethan Allen Furniture store to support myself.

1. How did you two meet and what motivated the decision to found Martinkovic Milford Architects? Justin: I founded the company in the depth of the 2001 recession. I was 25. I had leads for a couple of projects, and I was just ambitious enough and just naïve enough to strike out on my own.

1. What's the origin story of Straight Designs?  When I first started the company, I began with two "Doing Business As" names. The first was Kinky Designs and the other was Straight Designs.

1. How did you two meet and what prompted you to launch MINARC?We met through our work here in Los Angeles, even though we are both from Iceland. Both young and passionate, with strong opinions about sustainability and the function of spaces.

1. You studied sculpture in Japan and graphic design in Los Angeles; how did you eventually transition into interior design?I never liked the 2D of graphic design, so sculpture was perfect for me because I was able to work in 3-D.

1. How did you get your start in the design industry?As a native Angeleno, I spent much of my childhood living in historic homes, which sparked an affection for all things aged and beautiful.

1. You grew up surrounded by a family of stylish women who inspired your eye for design - tell us more about that. I grew up in two homes, both my mom’s and my dad’s, and was introduced to various art forms by strong, creative women at a very young age.

San Francisco's certainly seen its fair share of change over recent years (was there really ever a time when jackhammers didn't provide the city's daily soundtrack?).
